Cobleskill, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill indoor track and field teams are set to compete in the SUNYAC Championships for the first time in program history, with the meet taking place at SUNY Brockport on Friday, February 28, and Saturday, March 1.
Head coach Zach Haskin believes his team is prepared for the challenge and eager for the opportunity to compete against the conference's best.
"We treated this like any other week where we taper," Haskin said. "We don't want to put too much pressure on this training cycle, but the energy in practice has definitely picked up. The athletes are more than ready."
Haskin credits the team's dedication and mental preparation throughout the season as key factors in their readiness.
"The word of the week is focus," he added. "Physically and mentally, we're ready. This team has been driven all season to prepare for this moment."
Leading the way for Cobleskill are distance runners Nik Recore (Peru, NY) and Alyssa Freeguard (Argyle, NY), who have both had standout seasons. First-year multi-event competitor Anneliese Klein (Carlisle, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) will also look to make an impact after setting a new program record in the long jump last weekend with a mark of 5.33 meters (17'6").
Haskin is excited to see what his athletes can achieve on the conference stage.
"Anne Klein is looking to improve her long jump mark and move up in the regional rankings. Alyssa Freeguard has been outstanding in recent meets and is aiming for a strong performance in the 5K. Nik Recore has had his best indoor season yet and is ready to chase another personal best."
