Cambridge, MA: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team rolled to an 83-46 victory over Lesley University on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference action, controlling the game from start to finish.
Logan Thayne (Hoosick Falls, NY) led the charge with a dominant double-double, posting 22 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks, and an assist while shooting an efficient 50 percent from the field (8-16) and a perfect 3-for-3 from the line. She was relentless on the glass, pulling down a game-high five offensive rebounds.
Antonia May (Amsterdam, NY) stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists, shooting an impressive 5-of-8 from the floor. Seniors
Cara Walker (Phelps, NY/Midlakes) and
Taylor Meacham (Berne, NY/Berne-Knox-Westerlo) chipped in eight points each, with Walker adding six rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Meacham grabbed four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Off the bench,
Annie Canales (North Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley) provided a spark with eight points, including a pair of three-pointers.
The Fighting Tigers dominated the stat sheet, shooting 40.7 percent from the field while holding Lesley to 30.2 percent. They owned the glass with a 55-35 rebounding edge, leading to a 25-5 advantage in second-chance points. Despite struggling from deep (5-27, 18.5%), they capitalized on turnovers, forcing 20 and scoring 28 points off Lesley's miscues. Cobleskill also outscored the Lynx 52-22 in the paint and got a major boost from the bench, which contributed 31 points.
Cobleskill set the tone early, racing out to a 12-2 lead behind a three-pointer and a pair of free throws from May just three minutes into the game. A fastbreak layup by Canales, assisted by
Talia Washington (Schenectady, NY), kept the Fighting Tigers in control, and they maintained a 21-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The defensive intensity ramped up in the second, as Cobleskill held Lesley to just six points in the period. Thayne went to work inside, scoring 10 straight points on a mix of post moves and second-chance buckets to extend the lead to 31-11. Lesley finally broke through at the 1:49 mark, but the Fighting Tigers carried a commanding 37-17 lead into the break.
The third quarter saw Cobleskill continue to pour it on, opening with an 18-6 run to stretch their lead to 55-25. Washington and
Sierra Goodson (Amsterdam, NY) knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to keep the offense rolling, while a putback layup by
Amber MacNeil (Hoosick Falls, NY) pushed the advantage to 65-27. The Tigers took a 67-30 lead into the final frame.
Cobleskill carried their momentum into the fourth, extending their lead to 73-34 behind layups from Thayne and Meacham.
Audriana Hollister (Mooers Forks, NY/Northeast Clinton) added a late bucket, and
Alyssa Martin (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) knocked down a jumper in the closing seconds to cap off the decisive win.
The Fighting Tigers return to action on Friday, February 14, when they host Vermont State Johnson. The game will be part of Cobleskill's celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
