Utica, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill men's track and field team put together a balanced showing at the Utica Pioneer Spring Invitational on Sunday at the Laura M. Casamento Field.
The highlight of the day came in the triple jump, where sophomore
Thomas Herberger (Avon, NY) delivered a runner-up finish with a leap of 12.92 meters (42-4 ¾), the Tigers' top individual performance of the meet. Herberger also cleared 1.69 meters (5-6 ½) in the high jump to place ninth.
In the 4x100-meter relay, the team of
Gregory McDonald (Wells, ME),
Charles Cooper (Connetquot, NY),
Patrick Ponzo (Albany, NY), and
Allen Simms (Ithaca, NY) sprinted to third place with a time of 45.47 seconds, showing strong chemistry in the handoffs.
Gregory McDonald led a trio of Cobleskill sprinters in the 100-meter dash, placing 11th in 11.50. Ponzo followed in 24th at 11.78, and
Quinn Service took 35th in 12.17. McDonald and Cooper returned in the 200 meters, with Cooper pacing the Tigers in 27th at 24.70 and Service crossing in 32nd at 25.25.
On the hurdles,
Charles Cooper grabbed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:02.87, while
Zachary Russell (Deposit, NY) clocked 17.01 for eighth in the 110-meter hurdles. Russell also contributed in the javelin, placing seventh with a throw of 34.65 meters (113-8).
In the distance events,
Nik Recore (Peru, NY) placed sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:55.19, and
Antonio Gonzalez (Niskayuna, NY) ran 2:14.71 for 29th in the 800 meters.
In the field events,
Cal Marks (Wellsburg, NY) and
Mark Temp (Richmondville, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) both notched personal bests in the hammer throw. Marks placed 12th with a mark of 41.97 meters (137-8), and Temp was 23rd with a toss of 30.60 meters (100-5). Marks also finished fourth in the discus at 34.19 meters (112-2). In the shot put,
Xavier Poole placed 19th with a throw of 10.48 meters (34-4 ¾).
Rounding out the day,
Allen Simms recorded a 20th-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.39 meters (17-8 ¼), adding to a well-rounded performance from the Cobleskill men.
