Cobleskill Drops Doubleheader in NAC Battle at Husson

Bangor, ME: In a clash of North Atlantic Conference unbeatens, the SUNY Cobleskill baseball team came up short on the road Tuesday, dropping both games of a doubleheader to Husson University. The opener was a tightly contested pitcher's duel, while game two saw the Eagles pull away with a big inning to seal the sweep.

Game One: Cobleskill 2, Husson 3
In the opener of Tuesdays NAC doubleheader, Cobleskill found themselves locked in a classic pitcher's duel with Husson, falling just short in a late-inning rally that came up a run shy in a 3-2 loss.

First-year shortstop Jeffrey Gutierrez (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Hayes) stayed hot at the plate, leading all hitters with a 3-for-4 performance while swiping two bags. Senior Zach Ducorsky (Oceanside, NY) turned in a strong game as well, going 2-for-5 with a run scored. Korin Laurilla (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) drove in Cobleskill's only RBI, and Cole Platt (Oneonta, NY) laced a double to finish 1-for-3.

Tanner Wood (Glenville, NY) took the ball to start and went 3.2 innings, giving up just three hits and three runs while striking out one while picking up the loss (0-2). Jack Laughlin (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) was dominant in relief, shutting the door on the Eagles' lineup over 4.1 scoreless innings. He scattered three hits and struck out seven, keeping Cobleskill within striking distance the rest of the way.

Husson struck early, using a first-inning double to right to jump out to a 1-0 lead. The Tigers answered in the top of the second, capitalizing on aggressive baserunning and a few Husson miscues. Laurilla advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt, then came across to score on a balk to even things at 1-1.

The Eagles did their damage in the third, tacking on two runs to go up 3-1. From there, both teams settled into a groove as pitching and defense ruled the middle innings.

Cobleskill mounted a late push in the eighth. Ducorsky singled and came around to score when Laurilla punched a base hit up the middle, trimming the deficit to 3-2. But the Tigers couldn't complete the comeback in the ninth, stranding the tying run as Husson held on for the narrow win.

Game Two: Cobleskill 1, Husson 11
Husson rode a six-run fourth inning to pull away from Cobleskill in game two of this NAC doubleheader, securing an 11-1 win.

Korin Laurilla paced the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with the team's only RBI. He knocked in Ducorsky in the top of the first with a sharp single to left center. Ducorsky sparked the offense early, going 1-for-1 with a run scored and a stolen base. Jesus Sarda (Colonie, NY) and Logan Firment (Andes, NY/South Kortright) added the only other hits for the Tigers.

Tyler Sienko (Binghamton, NY/Windsor) got the start on the hill for the Tigers and took the loss (2-1), tossing 3.1 innings and allowing five hits and four runs—three of them earned—while striking out two. Cobleskill turned to the bullpen to cover the rest of the game, using five relievers. Declan Krogman (New York, NY/Xavier) and Cody Korona (Broadalbin, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) each recorded a strikeout in their one-inning stints.

Cobleskill opened the scoring in the first and threatened to tack on more. After Laurilla's RBI single, Sarda ripped one down the line for a base hit and Platt worked a walk to load the bases. But the Eagles wiggled out of the jam, limiting the damage to just the one run.

Husson responded quickly with a three-run second and blew the game open in the fourth, plating six runs to build a 9-1 cushion. The Tigers couldn't string together much offensively after their first-inning rally, and Husson saw out the rest of the game to cap the doubleheader sweep.

Up Next:
The Tigers return to action on Friday, April 18, as they travel to Hamilton College for a single game starting at 4:00 p.m. in Clinton, NY.
