Cobleskill Drops Two at Skidmore to End Six-Game Surge

Saratoga Springs, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill softball team saw their six-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday afternoon, dropping both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to Skidmore College. The Fighting Tigers fell 8-3 in the opener before taking a 9-1 setback in game two.

Game One: Cobleskill 3, Skidmore 8
Despite outhitting the Thoroughbreds 11-9, the Fighting Tigers couldn't convert their early baserunners into runs and found themselves playing from behind most of the game.

Cobleskill's bats stayed hot, led by sophomore Mackenzie Wendelken (Stuyvesant, NY/Ichabod Crane), who went 2-for-4 at the dish. First-year Brielle Dixon (Millville, NJ) also turned in a strong outing, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Avery Prievo (Camden, NY) smacked the Tigers' lone extra-base hit, finishing 1-for-4 with a double and a run. Jenna Smyczynski (East Aurora, NY), Kylie Rattigan(Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington), Gabriella Wendelken (Stuyvesant, NY/Ichabod Crane), Aliyah Neeser (Forest Lake, Minn/Forest Lake Area), Brook Irizarry (Florida, NY/S.S. Seward), and Kailee DiGiacco (Spencerport, NY) each chipped in a hit.

Gabriella Wendelken (4-4) took the ball for Cobleskill and tossed all six innings, allowing eight runs (six earned) on nine hits while striking out five.

Skidmore struck first with a run in the opening frame and tacked on two more in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Cobleskill stranded runners in each of the first three innings and couldn't break through until the sixth, when they plated three runs thanks to four hits and a pair of Skidmore throwing errors to cut the deficit to 6-3. But the Thoroughbreds answered with two in the bottom half to put the game out of reach. The Tigers tried to rally again in the seventh, putting two runners aboard, but Skidmore shut the door.

Game Two: Cobleskill 1, Skidmore 9
The Fighting Tigers came out swinging in the nightcap, scoring in the top of the second when Samantha Bargren (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Avery  Prievo to make it 1-0.

Kylie Rattigan went 2-for-3 to pace the offense, while Bargren, Gabriella Wendelken, and Hannah Dean (Ripley, ME/Dexter) added hits. But the offense was kept in check the rest of the way by Skidmore's pitching staff.

Madelynn Orosz (6-2) took the loss in the circle, tossing 5.2 innings and giving up 16 hits and nine runs while fanning three.

After falling behind 1-0, the Thoroughbreds answered with single runs in the second and third, followed by a three-run fourth that opened things up. Skidmore then walked it off in the sixth with four more runs to enforce the run rule and secure the sweep.

Up Next:
The Fighting Tigers return to action on Friday, April 25, when they travel to VTSU-Lyndon for a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
