Poughkeepsie, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill Baseball team came up short in a pair of tight, low-scoring battles on Sunday afternoon, falling to Vassar College 2-0 in game one and 2-1 in extra innings in game two. The losses drop the Fighting Tigers to 5-12 overall, while the Brewers improve to 9-11 on the season.
Game One: Cobleskill 0, Vassar 2 (7 innings)
Game one was a classic pitcher's duel between Cobleskill's
Dylan Schwam (Cooper City, FL/South Plantation) and Vassar's Will Darrell, with both starters keeping hitters off balance all afternoon.
Logan Firment (Andes, NY/South Kortright) led the Tigers at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance, while
Zach Ducorsky (Oceanside, NY) added a hit. Firment and
Ryan Lansing (Cooperstown, NY) each swiped a base.
Schwam went the distance in a tough-luck loss, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned), striking out three and walking one over six innings.
Cobleskill's best chance to score came in the sixth. Lansing reached on an error, stole second, and moved to third on a Ducorsky groundout, but the Tigers couldn't cash in. Vassar had already plated a run in the second on a failed pickoff attempt, then added an insurance run in the sixth after a balk and sac bunt set up a single up the middle.
Korin Laurilla (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) worked a walk in the seventh to give the Tigers late hope, but Vassar's bullpen shut the door.
Game Two: Cobleskill 1, Vassar 2 (8 innings)
Game two followed a similar script, with strong pitching and minimal offense defining the contest.
Jeffrey Gutierrez (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Hayes),
Anthony Sergi (Vernon, CT/Rockville), Firment, and Laurilla each recorded a hit, with Gutierrez and Sergi lacing doubles.
Trevor Grieb (Red Hook, NY) scored the Tigers' lone run after being hit by a pitch to lead off the game and coming around on a Ducorsky grounder that was mishandled.
Logan Scott (Binghamton, NY) turned in a stellar start, allowing just four hits and one unearned run over six innings while striking out three.
Reis Brammer (Cohoes, NY/CBA Albany) took the loss, giving up a single in the bottom of the eighth that ended it.
Vassar tied the game in the sixth with a well-placed squeeze bunt. Cobleskill nearly reclaimed the lead in the eighth when Gutierrez doubled and reached third on a passed ball, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the rally. In the bottom half, a wild pitch and an intentional walk loaded the bases for the Brewers, who walked it off with a single between first and second.
