Bradford, Pa. – The SUNY Cobleskill women's soccer team battled back twice to even the score but came up short in a 3-2 season-opening loss to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford on Friday evening.
Senior
Kayleigh Bryant (Schenevus, N.Y.) and freshman
Alexa Siegel (Cornwall, N.Y.) each scored their first collegiate goals for the Fighting Tigers.
Jessica Carney (Hopkinton, N.H.) and
EmmaJo Schmidtman (Salisbury, N.Y./OESJ) each added a shot on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Samantha Rotundo (New Egypt, N.J.) turned in a strong performance, making 10 saves to keep Cobleskill in the match.
The Panthers held statistical edges, outshooting Cobleskill 21-6 with a 13-4 advantage in shots on target, while also leading 5-1 in corner kicks.
Pitt-Bradford opened the scoring in the 39th minute through Mya King to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. Cobleskill responded early in the second half when Bryant buried a free kick from 38 yards out in the 57th minute to level the match at 1-1. King struck again in the 71st minute to put the hosts back in front, but Cobleskill answered just five minutes later as Siegel pounced on a loose ball from a corner and finished to tie the game at 2-2.
The Panthers regained control only three minutes later with the eventual game-winner, holding off Cobleskill's late push to secure the result.
