Cobleskill, NY – A suffocating defensive effort after halftime powered the SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team to a commanding 67-37 North Atlantic Conference road win over VTSU-Johnson on Friday night, as the Tigers limited the Badgers to just 14 second-half points.
Jaiyla Colon and
Kate Hadwen set the tone on the offensive end. Colon led all scorers with 18 points to go with seven rebounds, four steals and three assists, living at the free throw line where she went 10-for-12. Hadwen added 16 points and three rebounds with three steals on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting night, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
Hannah Bonczkowski chipped in seven points and three steals, while
Zaylee Ramos and
Mady Victorin each scored six. Ramos and
Sydney Delisle controlled the glass with nine rebounds apiece.
Cobleskill shot 29.3 percent from the field while holding Johnson to 25.5 percent. Both teams shot 20 percent from three and 62.5 percent from the free throw line, but the Tigers made their impact on the defensive end, forcing 31 turnovers and coming away with 21 steals that turned into 28 points and 16 fast break points. Cobleskill battled nearly even on the boards (43-44) and owned the paint, outscoring the Badgers 26-16 inside.
The opening quarter was tightly contested until the Tigers flipped the switch late. Trailing 13-11, Cobleskill closed the period on a 9-0 run, capped by a Bonczkowski layup and a Hadwen three at the horn to seize a 20-13 advantage.
That momentum carried into the second quarter. A three from
Emilie Eritano and a Bonczkowski jumper stretched the lead, and a
Kayleigh Bryant (Schenevus, NY) putback made it 27-16 for the first double-digit cushion. Delisle's midrange jumper kept the Tigers in front, and Cobleskill took a 31-23 lead into the break.
The Tigers tightened the screws defensively in the third. A Ramos layup pushed the margin to 39-25, and steady trips to the line from
Kyara Triblet helped maintain separation. Bonczkowski buried a late three to send Cobleskill to the fourth up 47-31.
Hadwen then took over. Back-to-back jumpers opened the final quarter, and she later rattled off nine straight points to put the game out of reach as the Tigers cruised to the 30-point victory. The limited Johnson to only six points in the quarter.
