Potsdam, NY – The SUNY Cobleskill women's soccer team was unable to overcome a first-half goal on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 to SUNY Potsdam in SUNYAC action at Maxcy Turf Field.
Senior defender
Kayleigh Bryant (Schenevus, NY) was active throughout the match, putting all three of her shots on target. Sophomore forward
Alexa Siegel (Cornwall, NY) added Cobleskill's other shot on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Sammy Fausti (Clayton, WA) turned in a standout performance between the posts, making a season-high 13 saves over 90 minutes to keep the Fighting Tigers within striking distance.
Potsdam finished with a 25-4 advantage in total shots and a 14-4 edge in shots on goal. The Bears also earned 12 corner kicks, but Cobleskill's backline stayed organized and continued to absorb pressure, breaking up several dangerous attacks and forcing Potsdam to work for its chances.
Fausti was tested early, coming up with back-to-back saves in the seventh and eighth minutes to keep the match scoreless. Siegel looked to create a breakthrough in the 26th minute with a long-range effort, but Potsdam eventually opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. Morgan Williams played a ball in behind the Cobleskill backline, where Adrianna Orlando got on the end of it and slotted her finish home for a 1-0 lead. Fausti came up with another close-range stop in the 35th minute as the Tigers went into halftime down by one.
Cobleskill continued to search for the equalizer after the break. Bryant forced the Potsdam goalkeeper into a save on a free kick in the 51st minute, while Fausti answered with consecutive stops in the 59th and 60th minutes to keep the margin at one. The Tigers' defense remained compact down the stretch, and Cobleskill nearly found a late equalizer in the 86th minute when Bryant's long-range effort forced a save. The rebound spilled in front of goal, but the Tigers were unable to get a finishing touch before Potsdam cleared the danger and held on for the 1-0 result.
