Naples, Fla. — The SUNY Cobleskill softball team earned a pair of victories on Wednesday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, defeating Pitt.-Bradford 6-5 in the opener before topping La Roche 8-5 in the afternoon game.
Game One: Cobleskill 6, Pitt.-Bradford 5
The Tigers battled back from an early deficit and held on late to secure a 6-5 victory over Pitt.-Bradford in the first game of the day.
Pitt.-Bradford jumped out quickly with four runs in the opening inning, but Cobleskill steadily chipped away at the lead. The Tigers responded with one run in the second, two in the third and another in the fourth to move back into contention before adding two key insurance runs in the sixth inning.
Kylie Rattigan paced the Cobleskill offense, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Sam Lawton added a double and two RBI, while Julia Barrieau reached base three times and scored twice as the Tigers produced timely hits throughout the lineup.
Despite committing five errors defensively, Cobleskill's pitching staff held Pitt.-Bradford scoreless over the final three innings to secure the one-run win.
Game Two: Cobleskill 8, La Roche 5
The Tigers carried their momentum into the second game of the day, defeating La Roche 8-5 to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Cobleskill jumped out early before La Roche answered with a five-run third inning to briefly take the lead. The Tigers responded by continuing to apply pressure offensively, producing runs across multiple innings to regain control of the game.
Sam Lawton once again led the Cobleskill offense, delivering a double and driving in two runs. The Tigers produced 11 hits in the contest, receiving contributions throughout the lineup to fuel the comeback victory.
Cobleskill pitching settled in following the third inning, limiting La Roche the rest of the way to help secure the Tigers' second win of the day.
