Cobleskill Battles in Doubleheader Clash with Russell Sage

Cobleskill, NY – The SUNY Cobleskill softball team battled Russell Sage College in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday evening at Cooperstown All-Star Village. The Fighting Tigers came up short in both contests, falling 4-1 in game one and 11-3 in game two.

Game One: Russell Sage 4, Cobleskill 1
The Fighting Tigers put together a competitive effort in the opener, but couldn't overcome an early deficit in a 4-1 loss.

First-year Baylee Yandow (Williston, VT) led the Cobleskill offense, going 2-for-3 with the team's lone RBI. Taegyn Hart (Hoosick Falls, NY) added a hit, while Julia Barrieau (Wolcott, CT) crossed the plate for the Tigers' only run.

In the circle, first-year Sam Lawton (Waterbury, CT) turned in a strong complete-game performance despite the loss. The right-hander tossed all 7.0 innings, allowing four runs—just one earned—on six hits while striking out five. She also induced six groundouts and 10 flyouts, keeping the Gators off balance throughout the game.

Russell Sage struck early, plating runs in each of the first two innings to build a 3-0 lead. The Gators added another in the fifth to extend the margin to 4-0.

Cobleskill answered in the bottom half of the fifth when Yandow delivered an RBI single to bring home Barrieau, cutting the deficit to 4-1. The Tigers threatened again late, putting runners on in the seventh, but couldn't push another run across as Sage closed out the win.

Game Two: Russell Sage 11, Cobleskill 3 (6 innings)
Cobleskill looked to bounce back in game two, but the Gators' offense took control early en route to an 11-3, six-inning decision.

Yandow continued to swing a hot bat, going 1-for-2 on the day. Kylie Rattigan (Poughkeepsie, NY) and Taegyn Hart each drove in a run, while Aliyah Neeser (Forest Lake, MN) delivered the Tigers' biggest hit of the game with a triple and later scored.

Lawton started in the circle, working 2.1 innings and allowing six runs on five hits. Madelynn Orosz (Seymour, CT) came on in relief, tossing 3.2 innings and surrendering five runs—three earned—on six hits. The Tigers were also hurt by defensive miscues in the wet conditions, committing four errors.

Russell Sage capitalized early, using a Cobleskill error to help build a 3-0 lead in the second inning. The Tigers answered in the bottom half as Gabriella Wendelken came around to score on a passed ball, trimming the deficit to 3-1.

The Gators responded with a four-run third inning to extend their lead to 7-1. Cobleskill continued to battle, pushing across runs in the third and fourth innings, including an RBI groundout from Rattigan that scored Yandow to make it 7-3.

Sage added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away. The Tigers showed life in the sixth, highlighted by Neeser's triple, but were unable to mount a late rally as the Gators closed out the sweep.
