Cobleskill, N.Y.: SUNY Cobleskill baseball made it a dominant Saturday at Fighting Tiger Field, sweeping Thomas College (ME) in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader by scores of 15-2 and 18-4. The Fighting Tigers combined for 30 hits and 33 runs across both games, posting crooked numbers in every inning from the third through the sixth in game two. The wins improve Cobleskill to 15-15 overall and 12-4 in conference play.
Game 1: Reis Brammer started and picked up the win, working five strong innings and allowing just two earned runs on five hits while striking out five. Brammer was effective early despite Thomas jumping on
Alex Burciaga for two quick runs in the first, as Cobleskill answered immediately and never looked back.
The Fighting Tigers put up a run in the bottom of the first when
Tony Woodie delivered a two-out RBI double off Gage Eggleston, and they broke the game open with a three-run third and four-run fourth. The third-inning eruption was fueled by a wild pitch, an error, and
Logan Firment's two-run single. In the fourth,
Christian Tedford singled home two more and
Cole Platt added another before the inning was done. Cobleskill continued to pile on in the fifth with a pair of sacrifice flies from Woodie and
Korin Laurilla, and added four more in the sixth on Laurilla's RBI single, Ryan Schwark's pinch-hit single,
Zach Papanikolatos's RBI knock, and
Michael Price's pinch-hit single to cap the scoring at 15.
Thomas's two runs came in the third on a Dj Cagnina single that scored Hayden Dippner and a Gavin Clark RBI single that plated Cagnina. Cobleskill's
Evan Balbera and
Vito Spadafina each worked a clean inning in relief to close it out.
Woodie paced Cobleskill offensively, reaching base in all of his plate appearances and finishing with an RBI double and a hit by pitch. Papanikolatos went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Platt drove in three on three hits.
Jeffrey Gutierrez reached base three times, scored three runs, and played solid defense all afternoon at shortstop.
Game 2: The nightcap was more of the same — and then some.
Alex Burciaga started and earned his fourth win of the season, pitching 3? innings while Thomas starter Aidan McMahon took the loss. Cobleskill sent Thomas to four different pitchers before the game was over.
Thomas got to Burciaga in the first, plating two on a Dj Cagnina single that cleared the bases. But Cobleskill responded with five in the third — Lansing hit an RBI single, Woodie's double drove home two, and
Zach Papanikolatos singled home another to put the Tigers in front to stay. The fourth inning brought five more, again aided by a wild pitch and Thomas errors.
Korin Laurilla and
Cole Platt delivered key run-producing hits in the rally, and Cagnina drew a bases-loaded walk from Jordan Craft before being picked off to end the inning in unusual fashion.
The sixth Cobleskill sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs.
Jake Brazzano singled home a run, Ryan Schwark's pinch single drove in another, Papanikolatos singled home Woodie, and Price's pinch single capped the frame. The Tigers finished with 20 hits and drew six walks.
Every starter reached base at least once. Woodie was again the catalyst, finishing 1-for-2 with four walks or HBP, four RBI and three runs scored.
Ryan Lansing was equally productive out of the two-hole, going 2-for-3 with two walks, two RBI, and two runs. Papanikolatos delivered 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Hunter Smith and
Greg Mable each tossed a clean inning in relief to preserve the blowout and give the bullpen a light afternoon.
