Fighting Tigers Fall Twice To #20 Husson In Conference Doubleheader

Cobleskill, NY: SUNY Cobleskill dropped a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader to nationally ranked No. 20 Husson University Saturday morning at Fighting Tiger Field, falling 9-0 and 2-1. The Fighting Tigers were held to just one hit in the opener before putting up a strong fight in the nightcap, trailing by one in the final inning before Rice's decisive blow ended Cobleskill's hopes.

Game One: Aliyah Neeser's fourth-inning single was the lone hit for Cobleskill against the righty, who entered the day with a 0.69 ERA. Neeser drew a walk in the fifth as well, giving her the only two times any Fighting Tiger reached base.

Cobleskill starter Madelynn Orosz was chased in the fourth after allowing five runs — three earned — on five hits. Five errors in the field compounded the trouble throughout the game, with four passed balls also fueling a Husson running game that stole five bases on the afternoon. Shortstop Lydia Rice was the difference-maker for the Eagles, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and two RBI. Rice, who enters the day hitting .415, has now gone deep four times this season.

Sam Lawton came on in relief for Cobleskill in the fifth, absorbing five runs — two earned — over three innings as Husson continued to apply pressure through aggressive baserunning.

Game 2: The second game told a different story for a half. Gabriella Wendelken matched Husson pitch for pitch for much of the afternoon under overcast skies, but Rice struck again with a solo home run in the seventh to snap a 1-1 tie and send the Fighting Tigers to a 2-1 defeat.

Wendelken worked all seven innings for Cobleskill, scattering just two hits while striking out four, walking three, and allowing two earned runs. The lefty's only earned run came on Rice's decisive blast in the seventh, her second home run of the day. The game's opener for Husson came in the fourth inning on a sac fly that plated Camryn King, who had walked and stolen second.

Cobleskill answered in the bottom of the fourth to knot the game at one. Neeser reached on a hit by pitch and promptly scored on a two-out RBI double by Avery Prievo — the team's lone extra-base hit of the game. But Ana Lang, who entered in relief of Braelynn Wilcox in the fourth, slammed the door from there, striking out 11 of the final 14 batters she faced to close out the win.

Kylie Rattigan was the most consistent offensive presence for Cobleskill, going 2-for-3 across different lineup configurations. The Fighting Tigers left five runners on base and were unable to cash in when it mattered most, going hitless in their final three innings.

Up Next: The Fighting Tigers return to action Wednesday, April 29, at non-conference opponent Elmira. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
