MALDEN, MA: SUNY Cobleskill baseball picked up a pair of wins on Saturday, sweeping a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader against Lesley University by scores of 11-5 and 9-3. The Fighting Tigers improve to 19-17 overall and 16-6 in NAC play heading into Sunday's regular season-closing doubleheader, also against Lesley.
Sophomore outfielder
Tony Woodie etched his name into the Cobleskill record books on the day, breaking the program's single-season home run record and single-season RBI record.
Game 1: SUNY Cobleskill shook off an early two-run deficit to pull away over nine innings, out-hitting the Lynx 15-9 and committing no errors in a clean, complete performance.
Lesley grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run double, but the Tigers answered quickly. In the third inning, Cobleskill used a walk, a single from Woodie, and a run-scoring fielder's choice by
Ryan Lansing to tie the game at two. The fifth inning was the decisive frame, as the Tigers erupted for five runs.
Jeffrey Gutierrez singled home a run, Woodie added a sacrifice fly RBI, Lansing doubled home a run,
Logan Firment singled in another, and
Logan Firment later stole home on a double steal to complete the rally.
Ryan Lansing's two-run double in the sixth stretched the lead to 10-5, and the Tigers added an insurance run in the seventh.
Woodie drove in two runs on the day, going 1-for-5 with the sacrifice fly and adding to his record-setting RBI total. Lansing had a standout game at the plate, going 2-for-6 with two doubles and four RBI. Firment contributed four hits and two RBI, and
Anthony Sergi added four hits while scoring twice.
Cole Platt worked three walks and scored three runs, while
Jeffrey Gutierrez went 2-for-5 with two RBI including a key hit-and-run single in the fifth.
On the mound, sophomore
Greg Mable (No. 6) earned the win, tossing five scoreless innings of relief to lock down the victory. Starter
Reis Brammer worked four innings before giving way to Mable in the fifth.
Game 2: The second game was over almost before it started. Cobleskill sent ten batters to the plate in the opening half-inning, plating eight runs before the Lynx recorded their first out of the game — and Woodie's record-setting moment arrived in the first swing.
With
Jeffrey Gutierrez on third base after a stolen base and a throwing error, Woodie launched a two-run home run to immediately put the Tigers on the board, 2-0. The inning only kept building. Lansing was hit by pitch and stole second, and
Logan Firment followed with a two-run shot of his own to make it 4-0.
Cole Platt's two-run double off the second Lesley pitcher later in the frame pushed the total to eight runs before the inning was complete.
Woodie finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI, including his record-breaking home run. Lansing went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a stolen base. Firment also went deep, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI. Platt added two hits and two RBI. Woodie added a run-scoring single in the third to continue his record-breaking day.
Connor Mulligan started on the mound and earned the win (4-2), pitching 4? innings and allowing three runs — one unearned while striking out three.
Jared Ainsworth was sharp in relief, throwing 2? scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
