Cobleskill, NY – The SUNY Cobleskill women's soccer team came up short against SUNY Poly on Wednesday evening, falling 4-0 at the Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
Sophomore
Alexa Siegel (Cornwall, NY) led the Fighting Tigers' attack with five shots, including three on target. Senior
Kayleigh Bryant (Schenevus, NY) added two shots, while
Kailin Backus (Lisbon, NY) and
Colette Kappauf (Oxford, NY) each recorded one attempt.
Goalkeeper
Sammy Fausti (Clayton, WA) was busy between the posts, finishing with 10 saves to keep Cobleskill within reach throughout the match.
SUNY Poly held a 20-9 advantage in total shots and a 14-3 edge in shots on goal. The Wildcats also finished with an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Poly opened the scoring in the early stages of the match and doubled its lead in the 17th minute when Lugo Mareos found the back of the net for her second goal of the contest. The Wildcats nearly added another in the 33rd minute, but Fausti came up with a strong save to keep the Tigers within two. Cobleskill's best opportunity of the half came in the 39th minute when Siegel drove at the Poly backline, beat a defender and fired a shot on frame, but the Wildcats' goalkeeper was there to make the save. Backus nearly pulled one back moments later from distance, sending an effort just wide as Poly carried a 2-0 lead into halftime.
SUNY Poly extended its advantage to 3-0 eight minutes into the second half. Cobleskill continued to look for a response, and Bryant came close in the 54th minute when her effort struck the woodwork. As the Tigers pushed numbers forward in search of a goal, the Wildcats capitalized on the other end and added a fourth in the 70th minute to close out the scoring. Fausti continued to battle between the posts, making several key saves throughout the second half.
