Canton, NY – The SUNY Cobleskill men's soccer team opened SUNYAC play with a 0-0 draw at SUNY Canton on Saturday afternoon, earning a point in the program's first-ever conference match.
Senior forward
Connor Fancher (Worcester, NY) led the Fighting Tigers' attack with four shots, including two on target.
Michael Neaton (Saratoga Springs, NY) and
Declan McCracken (South Kortright, NY) each added a shot on goal.
First-year goalkeeper
Sean Hanrahan (Elmira, NY) turned in a strong performance between the posts, recording the first clean sheet of his collegiate career while making a career-high eight saves.
SUNY Canton held a 28-7 advantage in total shots and an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. The Roos also finished with a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks, but Cobleskill's backline stayed organized and kept the hosts off the scoresheet.
Cobleskill created several dangerous chances in the opening half. Neaton nearly broke the deadlock on a free kick that skipped off the turf and forced the Canton goalkeeper to tip the ball over the crossbar. The Tigers' best chance came when
Rob Staubitz (East Rockaway, NY) slipped a through ball in behind the defense for Fancher, whose effort was pushed wide by the keeper. McCracken also tested the goalkeeper late in the half as the teams went into the break scoreless.
The match remained tight throughout the second half as both sides searched for the breakthrough. Canton came close to opening the scoring, but Hanrahan came up with a key save to push an effort over the crossbar. Cobleskill's defense continued to absorb pressure down the stretch, with Hanrahan making several important stops to preserve the clean sheet and secure the 0-0 draw.
