Washington, D. C.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's softball team split a pair of games to open the 2015 season defeating Notre Dame University of Maryland 6-3 in their season opener then dropping a 6-3 decision to host Gallaudet University by a 6-3 margin at the GU Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon. With the split the Fighting Tigers open the season with a 1-1 overall record.
In the opener the Fighting Tigers broke a 3-3 tie with the Gators in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs capitalizing on a walk, an error and a defensive miscue to break the game open.
Sophomore right fielder
Jessica Massi, Auburn, N.Y., Port Byron High School, drove in junior first baseman
Erin Wadsworth, Valatie, N.Y., Ichabod Crane High School, who had walked and advanced to third on a double to left field by sophomore right fielder
Easton Murray, Greenwich, N.Y., Greenwich High School, on a sacrifice fly with what turned into the eventual winning run. Offensively Wadsworth was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored while Murray was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored in the win.
Freshman pitcher
Morgan Nichols, Syracuse, N.Y., West Genesee High School, pitched three innings of one-hit relief with three strikeouts and no walks to earn the victory for the Orange & Black.
In the second game the Fighting Tigers dropped a 6-3 decision to host Gallaudet as the home team capitalized on three Cobleskill errors which led to all six of the Bison's runs.
Erin Wadsworth was a hard luck loser for the Orange & Black in her first start of the year striking out six and walking for in 3 1/3 innings of work.
At the plate first baseman
Morgan Nichols was 2-for-3 while junior catcher
Madeline DeMilio, Valhalla, N.Y., Valhalla High School, was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base hitting out of the lead-off spot.
The Fighting Tigers will close the road trip on Sunday when they face the Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland at 11:00 a.m. then take on the Bison of Gallaudet at 1:00 p.m.
