Cobleskill Softball Sweeps Morrisville State College in NEAC Doubleheader

Fighting Tigers Use Strong Pitching Efforts to Sweep Visiting Mustangs

Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's softball team swept the visiting Mustangs of Morrisville State College on Sunday afternoon at Fighting Tiger Park by scores of 6-3 and 4-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) North Division action. With the conference victories the Fighting Tigers improve to 17-2 overall including a division leading 11-1 mark in NEAC play while the Mustangs fall to 5-20 overall on the year with a 2-15 conference record.

In the first game the Fighting Tigers struck first with two first inning runs when junior catcher Madeline DeMilio, Valhalla, N.Y., Valhalla High School, led the game off with a walk stole second and advanced to third base when sophomore right fielder Erika Gogis, Pattersonville, N.Y., Schalmont High School, blooped a double down the left field line. Freshman first baseman Morgan Nichols, Syracuse, N.Y., West Genesee High School, then singled home DeMilio for the first run and senior third baseman Julia Lull, St. Johnsville, N.Y., St. Johnsville High School, singled home Gogis with two-outs for a 2-0 lead.

After Cobleskill extended their lead to 3-0 going into the top of the third the Mustangs broke into the scoring column when sophomore left fielder Brianna Martin, Brooklyn, N.Y., Tilden High School, led off with a single and advance to third on a Fighting Tiger error. Martin then scored on a single by sophomore first baseman Elizabeth Marr, Lindenhurst, N.Y., Lindenhurst High School, to make it 3-1.

The home team then put the contest away in the bottom of the third with a three-run rally highlighted by run scoring singles by freshman second baseman Jaimee Lord, Mechanicville, N.Y., Ballston Spa High School, and Madeline DeMilio.

The Mustangs did manage a pair of runs in the top of the fourth when freshman pitcher Allison McGuire, Gilboa, N.Y., Gilboa-Conesville High School, singled home Brianna Martin and freshman shortstop Heather Weinstein, Long Beach, N.Y., Long Beach High School, to make it 6-3. However this was as close as the visitors would come as the Fighting Tigers bullpen shut the door the rest of the way to secure the win.

Freshman right hander Emily Anger, Atlanta, N.Y., Wayland-Cohocton High School, started and earned the victory to improve to 4-0 on the year striking out one and walking none with relief help from junior Erin Wadsworth, Valatie, N.Y., Ichabod Crane High School, who earned her third save of the season by going three innings allowing no runs on one hit with five strikeouts and only one walk.

Mustang pitcher Allison McGuire was tagged with the loss to fall to 3-7 overall on the year going six innings allowing five earned runs on 11 hits striking out three and walking only one.

Madeline DeMilio led the Cobleskill offense from the top of the batting order going 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two RBI supported by the duo of Julia Lull who went 2-for-3 with a RBI and Jaimee Lord who was 2-of-3 with a double, a stolen base, two runs scored and a RBI.

The Mustangs were paced offensively by Brianna Martin who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and by Allison McGuire who was 1-for-3 with two RBI in the contest.
In the nightcap Cobleskill held a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Fighting Tigers pushed two runs across the plate on a pair of Mustang defensive miscues to make the score 4-1.

Mustang junior hurler Brittany Keator, Roxbury, N.Y., Roxbury High School/Fulton Montgomery Community College, was a hard luck loser in the game going the distance allowing only two earned runs in six innings holding the potent Cobleskill to six hits on the day to fall to 1-7 on the year.

Fighting Tiger pitcher Erin Wadsworth started and recorded the win to improve to 6-1 on the campaign allowing only two hits and one run in four innings of work striking out three and walking no one while Morgan Nichols recorded her second save of the year going three innings allowing no runs and no hits, striking out three Mustang hitters and walking only one.

Morrisville center fielder Elizabeth Miller, East Greenbush, N.Y., Columbia High School, had both Mustang hits going 2-for-3 with the visitors only run scored in the game.

Cobleskill freshman shortstop Angela Fix, Livingston, N.Y., Germantown High School, provided much needed offense in the game for the home team going 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.

The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Tuesday April 21 when the host NEAC rival Keuka College with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. while the Mustangs will return to action also on Tuesday traveling to Elmira, N.Y. to meet Elmira College in non-conference play beginning at 3:00 p.m.
