Fighting Tigers Use Long Ball to Over Power Keuka College 10-2 & 5-3

Fighting Tigers Sweep Wolfpack to Increase Lead in NEAC North Division

Cobleskill, N.Y.:  The SUNY Cobleskill women's softball team used the long ball to overpower visiting Keuka College in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action on Tuesday at Fighting Tiger Park by scores of 10-2 and 5-3 in a battle of the conference's North Division leaders. With the sweep the Fighting Tigers improve to 19-2 overall with a NEAC North Division leading 13-1 mark while the Wolfpack falls to 10-6 overall including a 10-4 league record.

Trailing 2-1 one going into the third inning of the opener the Fighting Tigers took the lead when freshman shortstop Angela Fix, Livingston, N.Y., Germantown High School, came to the plate with runners on second and third and two outs and promptly hit the second pitch of her at bat over the left field fence to give Cobleskill a 4-2 lead.

Then in the third inning after freshman first baseman Morgan Nichols, Syracuse, N.Y., West Genesee High School, doubled home a run to make it 6-2 in favor of the home team; junior pitcher Erin Wadsworth, Valatie, N.Y., Ichabod Crane High School, followed with her seventh homer of the season a two-run blast to left center field making it 8-2.

Cobleskill then ended the contest via mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth inning when junior catcher Madeline DeMilio, Valhalla, N.Y., Valhalla High School, blasted her third home run of the year over the right field fence with a runner on to give Cobleskill the 10-2 victory.

Erin Wadsworth registered the win going five innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits striking out seven and walking no one to improve her record to 7-1 on the year. Wadsworth was also a fact at the plate going 3-for-3 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and three RBI.

The Orange & Black also received strong offensive outings from Madeline DeMilio who was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI, Angela Fix who was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI and from Morgan Nichols who was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and a RBI.

In the nightcap Cobleskill trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning when with one out reserve second baseman freshman Brittany Fairchild, Sherburne, N.Y., Unadilla Valley High School, worked a walk then was singled to third by Madeline DeMilio with DeMilio taking second on the throw. Sophomore right fielder Erika Gogis, Pattersonville, N.Y., Schalmont High School, then laced a single up the middle scoring both runners to tie the game at 3-3 and bringing up Morgan Nichols with the lead run on base.

The Fighting Tigers freshman then proceeded to show why she is a strong candidate for conference Rookie-of-the-Year honors when she hit a drive of Ruthian proportions hitting high up in the trees beyond the center field fence, her eighth of the season, to make the score 5-3.

Erin Wadsworth notched the win on the mound to improve to 8-1 on the year going all seven innings allowing only two earned runs striking out 11 and walking only two.

Cobleskill will next be in action when the team travels to Williamsport, Pa. to face the Wildcats of Penn College of Technology for a NEAC doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
