Virginia Beach, Va.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's softball team's struggles continued at the 2018 Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast over the weekend as the Fighting Tigers dropped a 13-5 decision to the Bears of SUNY Potsdam followed by a 5-4 loss to the New Platz Hawks in eight innings. The losses drop the Fighting Tigers to 0-4 overall on the season to date.
Against the Bears, Cobleskill led 5-2 after the first inning as the Fighting Tigers capitalized on a series of walks and Potsdam defensive miscues but could mount little else in the way of offense as Potsdam held the Orange & Black in check for the rest of the game while pounding out 15 hits of their own in the contest.
Freshman first baseman Rachel Hall, Greenwich, N.Y., Greenwich High School, was 1-for-3 with a run scored on the afternoon for Cobleskill in the contest.
Against the Hawks the Fighting Tigers scored in the top of the seventh inning to tie the contest when pitcher Rachel Hall singled home sophomore center fielder Brianna Murphy, Yonkers, N.Y., Yonkers Montessori School, who had walked and stole second base.
The Orange & Black then took a 4-3 lead in the eighth junior shortstop Nicole Flint, Union Springs, N.Y., Cato-Meridian High School/Monroe Community College, scored on an error after being placed at second base under the international speed-up rule.
However in the bottom of the frame the Hawks scored twice to turn freshman hurler Rachel Hall into a hard luck loser.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action after the college's spring break when they travel to Aurora, N.Y. to face The Express of Wells College for a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Wednesday March 28 beginning at 3:00 p.m.
