Aurora, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's softball team returned to action on Wednesday afternoon opening their North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) season by splitting a pair of decisions with The Express of Wells College losing the first game 5-2 then taking the second game by a score of 9-8. With the split the Fighting Tigers move to 1-5 overall including a 1-1 mark in league action while The Express is now 2-9 overall with a 1-1 record in the conference.
In the opener, the Fighting Tiger defense showed signs of rust after not being outside in almost three weeks due to the recent weather conditions in the area as three Cobleskill errors led to three unearned runs and turned freshman hurler Brianne Hall, Greenwich, N.Y., Greenwich High School, into a hard luck loser once again despite allowing only two earned runs while striking out six and walking only one.
Offensively, senior catcher Gabriella Danthine, Sloansville, N.Y., Schoharie High School, went 2-for-3 with both RBI to lead the visitors with freshman designated hitter Edyliese Aquino, Stamford, Conn., Westhill High School, going 2-for-2 with a run scored.
In the second game, the Fighting Tiger offense came alive with 16 hits to out slug the home team and break into the win column with the top of the order doing the bulk of the damage as: sophomore right fielder Quesha Sells, Cobleskill, N.Y., Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, went 2-for-4 in the lead-off spot with two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases, junior shortstop Nicole Flint, Union Springs, N.Y., Cato-Meridian High School/Monroe Community College, was 2-for-5 with a homer, two runs scored and a RBI, senior third baseman Hannah Hoffman, Troy, N.Y., Columbia High School/Hudson Valley Community College, was a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI and first baseman/pitcher Rachel Hall, Greenwich, N.Y., Greenwich High School, who was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and four RBI in the win.
Edylies Aquino was the winning pitcher for the Orange & Black working five innings allowing three earned runs striking out two and walking two while Rachel Hall earned the save coming in with a runner on base in the seventh inning to preserve the win
Cobleskill will next be in action on Wednesday April 4 when they host the Wolves of Keuka College for NEAC doubleheader at Fighting Tiger Park beginning at 3:00 p.m. before traveling to Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. for a non-league twinbill beginning at 3:00 p.m.
