Clermont, Fla.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's softball team opened their 2019 campaign under the Florida sun on Sunday afternoon losing a pair of games at The Spring Games dropping a hard fought 6-5 game to the Scots of Macalester College from Saint Paul, Minn., prior to closing the day with a 15-1 loss to the Saints of St. Lawrence University from Canton, N.Y. With the losses the Fighting Tigers open the year with a 0-2 overall mark.
In the opener the Fighting Tigers trailed 6-2 going into the top of the fifth inning when sophomore pitcher
Rachel Hall, Greenwich, N.Y., Greenwich High School, capped a three run inning with a two-out single to cut the deficit to 6-5.
However that would be as close as the Orange & Black would come as the Scots would limit them to a scratch single over the last two innings to register the win.
Offensively,
Rachel Hall would finish the day 1-for-2 with a walk and a pair of RBI for the Fighting Tigers while sophomore designated hitter
Edyliese Aquino, Stamford, Conn., Westhill High School, would go 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Cobleskill would also receive contributions from freshman second baseman Alyssa Villelm, Rifton, N.Y., Kingston High School, who went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored and from freshman center fielder
Jillian Nitchman, Ballston Spa, N.Y., Ballston Spa High School, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the contest.
On the mound,
Rachel Hall took the loss working six innings allowing four earned runs striking out four and walking one.
In the day's second game, the Fighting Tigers lost by a 15-1 margin to the Saints of St. Lawrence University in a five inning contest as the Saints pounded out 13 runs in the third and fourth innings to put the game in the win column.
Cobleskill's lone run came in the bottom of the fourth inning when senior catcher
Gabrielle Danthine, Sloansville, N.Y., Schoharie High School, singled home designated hitter
Edyliese Aquino who had singled advanced to second on a single by first baseman
Rachel Hall and moved to third on a fielder's choice.
                                                                                                                                      Â
The Fighting Tiger offense was led by Danthine who would finish the game 2-for-2 with the team's RBI while Aquino would finish 1-for-2 with the team's run scored.
Rachel Hall would also finish the game 1-for-2 at the plate.
Freshman right hander
Victoria Decker, Stone Ridge, N.Y., Rondout Valley High School, took the loss for Cobleskill working 4 1/3 innings and allowing five runs.
The Fighting Tigers will return to action on Monday afternoon when they face the Fighting Scotts of The College of Wooster from Wooster, Mass. at 2:00 p.m. followed by a 4:00 p.m. meeting with the Green Knights of St. Norbert College from De Pere, Wis.
