Cazenovia College: The SUNY Cobleskill women's softball team opened the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) portion of their schedule on Saturday by traveling to Cazenovia College to drop a conference doubleheader to the host Wildcats by identical scores of 6-4 and 6-4. With the losses the Fighting Tigers are now 2-4 overall including a 0-2 mark in league action while the Wildcats are now 8-2 overall with a 4-0 record versus NAC opponents.
In the opening contest, the Fighting Tigers trailed 6-0 after six complete innings as three Cobleskill errors led to three unearned Wildcat runs before a seventh inning rally highlighted by a bases clearing triple by sophomore centerfielder
Jillian Nitchman, Ballston Spa, N.Y., Ballston Spa High School, made the score 6-4 with two outs.
However, that was a close as the visitors could come as the Wildcats recorded the last out to end the rally and record the victory.
Nitchman provided the bulk of the Cobleskill offense in the contest going 2-for-4 with three RBI while senior shortstop
Megan Gilligan, East Chatham, N.Y., Chatham High School, was perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 with a run scored. Junior
Alyssa Villielm, Rifton, N.Y., Kingston High School, was also 2-for-4 in the game with a run scored.
Junior right hander
Victoria Decker, Stone Ridge, N.Y., Rondout Valley High School, took the loss allowing three earned runs in five innings of work.
In the nightcap, Cobleskill once again fell behind early trailing 5-1 after four innings before rallying for a pair of runs in the sixth on a two-run homer by
Jillian Nitchman which made it 5-3.
Then after the Wildcats pushed a run across in the bottom of the inning making it 6-3; Cobleskill scored once in the top of the seventh to make it 6-4 but could come no closer as the home team allowed no other damage.
Once again Nitchman provided the bulk of the offense for the Orange & Black going 1-for-2 with a homer and two RBI while sophomore catcher
Ashley Covert, Castile, N.Y., Letchworth High School, was 2-for-4 in the game with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
Due to the treat of inclement weather on Sunday, by mutual agreement, the Fighting Tigers and Wildcats originally scheduled NAC doubleheader at the Wildcats Veterans Field has been postponed until a later date. Cobleskill is next scheduled to meet SUNY Delhi for a pair of conference games on Wednesday April 13 beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Fighting Tiger Park.
