Fighting Tiger Softball Sweeps SUNY Canton in Conference Action 6-2 & 11-3

Alexis Miranda Leads Fighting Tiger to NAC Sweep Over SUNY Canton on Friday


Cobleskill, N.Y.: In a home doubleheader that could have significant impact on the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Western Division standings the SUNY Cobleskill softball team a swept pair of conference home games from the visiting Kangaroos of SUNY Canton on Friday afternoon at Fighting Tiger Park by scores of 6-2 and 11-3. With the wins the Fighting Tigers improve to 7-19 overall including a 4-3 record in league action while the Kangaroos are now 2-18 overall on the year with a 0-8 record in NAC play.
 
In the opener the Fighting Tigers broke a 1-1 dead lock in the bottom of the fourth when senior EmmaRae Easton, Coudersport, Pa., Coudersport High School, drove home first-year second baseman EmmaGrace Scilleppi, Williamson, N.Y., Williamson Central High School, from third base on a sacrifice fly followed by a three-run home run off the bat of junior first baseman Alexis Miranda, Nashua, N.H., Nashua High School, to give the home team a 5-1 advantage from which they never looked back.
 
Senior pitcher Marissa Wheeler, Stuyvesant, N.Y., Ichabod Crane High School, recorded the victory by going the distance allowing two earned runs over seven innings on five hits striking out 12 and walking four.
 
At the plate Alexis Miranda, Nashua, N.Y., Nashua High School, finished he day 1-for-3 with the home run, a stolen base, two runs scored and three RBI while EmmaRae Easton was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore designated player Olivia DeMott, Sidney, N.Y., Sidney High School, was also a factor in the win going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
 
 In the second game, Cobleskill broke open a 3-3 tie once again in the bottom of the fourth by pushing eight runs across the plate highlighted by a two-run single by senior centerfielder Abigail Scheurich, Oxford, N.Y., Nonnewaug High School, and a two-run triple by left fielder Alexis Miranda.
 
Offensively the Orange and Black were led by Alexis Miranda who went 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI and by sophomore first baseman Mackenzie Wendelken, Stuybesant, N.Y., Ichabod Crane High School, who went 1-for-4 with a double, a run scored and three RBI. Centerfielder Abigail Scheurich was also a key contributor in the victory going 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI.

On the mound, first-year hurler Kimberly Olsen, Schoharie, N.Y, Schoharie High School, notched the complete game victory allowing three runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking only one.
 
The Fighting Tigers and Kangaroos will close out their series at Fighting Tiger Park Saturday, April 22, with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
