Fighting Tiger Softball Feasts on SUNY Canton Kangaroos in Doubleheader Sweep

Marissa Wheeler No-Hits SUNY Canton in Doubleheader Opener on Saturday

Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill softball team closed out their season series versus the visiting Kangaroos of SUNY Canton by sweeping a pair of games on Saturday played at Fighting Tiger Park. The Fighting Tigers took the opening game 9-0 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action then out slugged the visitors to win the second game, which was a non-league contest, by a 14-6 margin. With the sweep Cobleskill is now 10-19 overall on the year with a 5-3 record in league play while the Kangaroos are now 2-20 overall in league action with a 0-9 NAC record.

On Fighting Tiger "Senior Day" the first game was all about senior pitcher Marissa Wheeler, Stuyvesant, N.Y., Ichabod Crane High School, who came within one out of a perfect five-inning game but still no-hit the Kangaroos striking out 10 while walking only one to move to 6-7 overall in a dominate effort.

The home team scored all the runs they needed in the first inning when junior first baseman Alexis Miranda, Nashua, N.H., Nashua High School, blasted a three-run home run to stake the team to a 3-0 lead from which they never looked back.

Miranda led the Cobleskill offense by going 2-for-3 with the homer, two runs scored and three RBI while sophomore catcher Mackenzie Wendelken, Kinderhook, N.Y., Ichabod Crane High School, went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Marissa Wheeler also contributed to the win at the plate going 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored and two RBI.

The second game saw both teams posting impressive offensive number with the Fighting Tigers dining on Kangaroo pitching to the tune of 14 runs on 16 hits including seven doubles to claim the victory.

The top of the Cobleskill batting order did the bulk of the damage in the win led by sophomore designated player/pitcher Olivia DeMott, Sidney, N.Y., Sidney High School, who was 4-for-5 with two doubles, four runs scored and two RBI, senior shortstop EmmaRae Easton, Coudersport, Pa., Coudersport High School, who went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and three RBI and from left fielder Alexis Miranda who was 3-for-3 with a double, a stolen base, three runs scored and three RBI. Catcher Mackenzie Wendelken also had a big game at the plate going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Sophomore right hander Jaydaci Chamberlain, Northborough, Mass., Norfolk County Agricultural High School, went four innings allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out three for her first collegiate victory.

Cobleskill will next be in action on Tuesday April 25 when they host SUNY Delhi for a pair of games beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Fighting Tiger Park the first one being a NAC game and the second being a non-league contest.
