SUNY Cobleskill Softball Drops Pair to SUNY Poly Wildcats in NAC Play

Utica, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill softball team closed out their season opening North Atlantic Conference (NAC) series with a pair of losses to the host Wildcats of the SUNY Polytechnic Institute by scores of 8-2 and 5-4 on Saturday in games played at Utica College Greenman Field. With the losses the Fighting Tigers move to 3-14 overall on the year including a 0-3 record in league action while the Wildcats are now 12-4 overall with a 3-0 conference record.

In the opener the Fighting Tigers fell behind 5-0 after two innings and could only manage a pair of unearned runs against Wildcat senior ace Trinity Critelli, Frankfort, N.Y., who held the visitors to five hits.

Sophomore relief pitcher Olivia DeMott, Sidney, N.Y., Sidney High School, went 2-for-3 at the plate for Cobleskill while her battery partner sophomore catcher Mackenzie Wendelken, Stuyvesant, N.Y., Ichabod Crane High School, was 1-for-3 in the contest.

In the nightcap the Fighting Tigers fell behind 3-1 after the first inning but then took the lead in the second when they struck for three-runs behind RBI singles from junior first baseman Alexis Miranda, Nashua, N.H., and junior left fielder Emily Lutz, Ellenville, N.Y., Ellenville High School.

Cobleskill held the lead until the fifth inning when the Wildcats capitalized a pair of defensive miscues to take a 5-4 lead from which they never looked back.

Fighting Tiger senior hurler Marissa Wheeler, Kinderhook, N.Y., Ichabod Crane High School, turned in a strong outing in defeat allowing only one earned run in six innings while recording four strikeouts.

At the plate designated player Olivia DeMott operating in the lead-off spot went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Alexis Miranda went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the game.

Cobleskill will return to action on Tuesday April 11 when they travel to Castleton, Vt for a pair of non-conference games versus the Spartans of Castleton University beginning at 3:00 P.M.
