North Adams, MA: The Cobleskill men's lacrosse team fell short in a nail biter to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 14-13 on Wednesday night.
Cobleskill jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to two unassisted goals by
Albert Sippio (Syracuse, NY). MCLA battled back scoring three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead with 6:02 on the clock in the first quarter. Then at the 3:54 mark freshman
Alex Baker (Guilford, VT) found
Sean D'Amaro (Northport, NY) who slotted it past the MCLA keeper to tie the game up at 3-3. The Trailblazers would score one more time to take a 4-3 lead at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter saw both teams step up their defensive intensity in a physical back and forth game. The Fighting Tigers trailed 5-3 before D'Amaro found the back of the net twice to tie the game 5-5 at the 9:07 mark. MCLA took the lead just 40 seconds later, but Cobleskill clawed their way back to take a 7-6 lead heading into halftime thanks to goals from freshman
Robert Staubitz (East Rockaway, NY) and
Alex Baker.
At the half, D'Amaro led the Tigers with three goals while Baker added a goal and an assist.
MCLA started to mount their comeback in the third quarter and took a 9-8 lead before D'Amaro scored his fifth goal of the game to tie the game back up at 9-9. However, the Fighting Tigers defense couldn't handle MCLA's Anthony Andolina, who scored four goals in the third quarter, and gave the Trailblazers a 12-9 lead heading into the final quarter.
Cobleskill started the fourth quarter on a 2-0 run after goals from
Albert Sippio and sophomore Trevor Masocco (Eden, NY), but MCLA answered with a Lucan McGrath unassisted goal to reclaim a two-goal advantage, 13-11. The Fighting Tigers wouldn't go down without a fight and scored two goals within 23 seconds of each other to tie the game at 13-13. With the game hanging in the balance, both teams had chances to take the lead, but it was MCLA that scored with 1:40 to play to take a 14-13 lead and the win.
Sean D'Amaro led the Tigers with five goals on 14 shots. Sippio added four goals on five shots while Staubitz had a nice overall game of one goal, three assists and four ground balls. Trevor Masocco was all over the field for Cobleskill finishing with nine ground balls to go with two goals and one assist.
Freshman
James Meier (Guilderland, NY) finished the game with 14 saves on 28 shots for the Fighting Tigers. Masocco went 10-19 in face offs while Chris Sgueglia (Rochester, NY) finished 4-9 in face offs as well.
MCLA outshot Cobleskill 52-40 (28-20 sog). The hosts picked up 56 ground balls compared to Cobleskill's 36. The Trailblazers held a slim advantage in faceoffs 16-15.
Cobleskill will be in action next on Saturday, April 13
th at 1:00 PM as they host SUNY Canton in a NAC battle at the Lacrosse/Soccer Complex at Cobleskill.
