Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill softball team wrapped up their current homestand on Wednesday afternoon by splitting a non-league doubleheader with the visiting Trailblazers of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) losing the first game 8-2 then taking the second game 5-4. With the split the Fighting Tigers are now 11-13 overall while the Trailblazers are now 10-22 overall.
In the opener the Trailblazers jumped out to an early 5-1 advantage and never looked back pounding out 12 hits and drawing four walks against Fighting Tiger pitchers to secure the victory.
Cobleskill received strong efforts at the plate from senior third baseman
Deanna Palmer, Auburn, N.Y., Auburn High School/Finger Lakes Community College, who went 2-for-3 with a home run and form first-year designated player
Jenna Smyczynski, East Aurora, N.Y., East Aurora High School, who was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
In the finale the Fighting Tigers jumped out to 4-1 lead after three innings on the strength of a second inning RBI double by junior shortstop
Kailee DiGiacco, Spencerport, N.Y., Spencerport High School, and a third inning RBI triple by senior left fielder
Emily Lutz, Ellenville, N.Y., Ellenville High School, who then scored on a throwing error.
However, MCLA would later score a run in the top of the sixth and then tie the contest in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs on an infield ground out to even the score at 4-4.
In the bottom of the seventh with one out left fielder
Emily Lutz moved to second a single by third baseman
Deanna Palmer and advance to third on a fly out to right by first-year catcher
Gianna Guido, Clifton Park, N.Y., Shenendehowa High School.
Then with two outs first-year right fielder
Jaidin Wendt, Dalmatia, Pa., Line Mountain High School, drew a walk with ball four going to the backstop allowing Lutz to scamper home with the winning run.
Sophomore pitcher
Kimberly Olsen, Schoharie, N.Y., Schoharie High School, recorded the victory going the distance allowing four earned runs on eight hits.
At the plate
Emily Lutz paced the Fighting Tigers attack going 2-for-2 with two triples, two walks, three runs scored and an RBI while
Deanna Palmer went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Cobleskill will take to the road over the weekend traveling to Johnson, Vt. for a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) series versus the Badgers of Vermont State University-Johnson with a solo contest on Friday April 26 with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m. followed with a doubleheader on Saturday April 27 beginning at 12:00 p.m.
