Cara Walker Named SUNY Cobleskill Senior Athlete of the Year

Cobleskill, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill Athletic Department hosted its annual Athletics Award Ceremony earlier this May, where senior Cara Walker (Phelps, NY/Midlakes) of the Fighting Tiger women's basketball team was honored as the 2024–25 SUNY Cobleskill Female Senior Athlete of the Year.

The award is presented annually to the graduating senior whose athletic career is considered the most exceptional of the graduating class.

In just two seasons at Cobleskill after transferring from Morrisville, Walker made a lasting impact on the women's basketball program, helping lead the team to record-breaking success. She was a key figure in the Tigers' turnaround, contributing to a new program record for most wins in a season during the 2023–24 campaign. Her leadership continued into the 2024–25 season, when Cobleskill posted its first undefeated home record, won its first North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship, and made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Walker was named to the All-NAC First Team in 2023–24 and earned Second Team honors this season despite missing time early in the year. She averaged 11.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.0 steal per game in 2024–25, while earning NAC Player of the Week and D3hoops.com Team of the Week recognition. She was also named to the 2024-25 NAC Women's Basketball All-Tournament Team.

She is the only player in program history to record a triple-double at the NCAA level, finishing a game with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists in just 23 minutes of action. That performance earned her the 2023–24 SUNY Cobleskill Performance of the Year Award. Over her Cobleskill career, she averaged 12.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 45.8 percent from the field, 71.9 percent from the free-throw line, and 30.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Head women's basketball coach Megan Bowman reflected on Walker's legacy and the standard she leaves behind.

"Cara has had one of the most impressive four-year careers I have ever seen at any level in any sport," said Bowman. "She will graduate as a three-time conference champion, four-time all-conference player, and one of our first 1,000-point scorers. Her success is rooted in her desire to win at all costs. Cara has excelled in every position and role she's been asked to play and was a pivotal part of our success. During her time in a Cobleskill jersey, she helped lead us to a 49-7 record. She will leave as one of the most decorated and winningest players in program history—but most importantly, she leaves as a champion."
