Tigers Split Monday Doubleheader in Florida

Cobleskill blanks Elms 13-0 in five innings before dropping a back-and-forth 9-8 decision to Alfred State

FORT MYERS, FL. — The SUNY Cobleskill softball team split a pair of games on Monday in Florida, rolling past Elms 13-0 in five innings in the opener before falling 9-8 to Alfred State in the second game of the day.

Game One: Cobleskill 13, Elms 0 (5 innings)

The Tigers broke the opener open early and never looked back, plating three runs in the first, five in the second and five more in the fourth on the way to a five-inning shutout.

Jaydaci Chamberlain was sharp in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just three hits and two walks with six strikeouts over five innings. Cobleskill limited Elms to three hits and held the Blazers scoreless in every frame.

At the plate, the Tigers made the most of seven hits and took advantage of five Elms errors. Kylie Rattigan drove in two runs and doubled, while Julia Barrieau also doubled and finished with two RBI. Aliyah Neeser knocked in two runs, and Gabriella Wendelken, Mackenzie Carver and Jillian Jensen each added an RBI as Cobleskill piled up 13 runs in the win.

Game Two: Alfred State 9, Cobleskill 8

Cobleskill nearly rallied all the way back in the nightcap, scoring in four different innings and putting three runs on the board in the seventh, but Alfred State held on for a one-run win.

The Pioneers jumped out quickly with five runs in the opening inning, but the Tigers answered with two in the second and two more in the fifth to stay within striking distance. Cobleskill added one in the sixth and mounted one final push in the seventh before Alfred State escaped with the 9-8 victory.

Gabriella Wendelken led the Cobleskill offense in game two, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Sammy Fausti finished 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored, while Julia Barrieau added two hits and scored twice. Mackenzie Carver drove in a run, and the Tigers finished with eight hits and four walks in the setback.
