Cobleskill, NY – The SUNY Cobleskill Ag & Tech Athletics Department named Steve Wieczorek as the next head coach of the men's soccer program, Director of Athletics Marie Curran announced Tuesday.
"We are thrilled to welcome
Steve Wieczorek to the Fighting Tigers family," Curran said. "Steve brings an exceptional depth of experience across all three NCAA divisions, a proven ability to build winning cultures, and a track record of developing student-athletes both on the field and in the classroom. His record of guiding programs to NCAA Tournament appearances speaks for itself, and we are confident he will elevate men's soccer at SUNY Cobleskill to new heights. We can't wait to see what he builds here."
"I would like to thank Vice President for Student Development, Dr. Anne Hopkins Gross, and Director of Athletics, Marrie Curran, for their trust in me to lead this program in a pivotal moment in its history," said Wieczorek. "I feel honored to become the next head men's soccer coach at SUNY Cobleskill. It is a privilege to represent this proud SUNY institution and always an exciting challenge to compete in a top conference like the SUNYAC."
Wieczorek brings extensive collegiate coaching experience to Cobleskill, along with familiarity in the Capital Region, most recently serving as an assistant coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Prior to RPI, he spent the 2024 season as an assistant coach at the University at Albany following successful head coaching tenures at The College of Saint Rose and Spring Hill College.
A veteran of college soccer with experience across NCAA Division I, II, and III, Wieczorek has built a reputation for transforming programs, developing talent, and leading teams to sustained success. Throughout his career, he has helped guide four collegiate programs to NCAA Tournament appearances as both a head coach and assistant coach, while mentoring conference players of the year, rookies of the year, All-Americans, and professional players.
"My goal is to elevate the profile of the men's soccer program and create a culture of sustained excellence on the field and in the classroom," Wieczorek added. "We will play an exciting brand of attacking soccer and try to go toe-to-toe with the SUNYAC's best."
Wieczorek was named head coach at Saint Rose prior to the 2022 season and immediately led the Golden Knights to one of the most successful seasons in program history. In his first season, Saint Rose earned its first NCAA Tournament appearance after finishing 9-5-4 overall and 5-3-3 in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Golden Knights received the No. 9 seed in Super Region I and advanced to the Northeast-10 Championship Quarterfinals in both seasons under his leadership.
Saint Rose marked the fourth collegiate program Wieczorek helped lead to the NCAA Tournament. Prior to that, he spent six seasons as head coach at Spring Hill College, where he became the winningest coach in program history and elevated the Badgers into a nationally recognized NCAA Division II program.
During the 2018 season, Spring Hill produced one of the most dominant campaigns in Gulf South Conference history. The Badgers captured both the regular season and conference tournament championships with a perfect 11-0 conference record, becoming the only team in league history to accomplish the feat. Spring Hill finished 17-2 overall, advanced to the NCAA Tournament during the program's first season of postseason eligibility, and earned a No. 21 national ranking in the final United Soccer Coaches poll. The 17 victories established a new school record, while five players earned All-Conference honors, including United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American Alex Lipinski.
Across his coaching career, Wieczorek has coached and developed multiple MLS Draft selections, a Gulf South Conference All-Decade Team selection, and two MAAC 40 Year Anniversary Team honorees. His programs have also consistently excelled in the classroom, earning USC Team Academic Awards in every year of his head coaching career, along with multiple Academic All-Americans, including the Division II Academic All-American of the Year in 2018.
In addition to his head coaching experience, Wieczorek has accumulated extensive NCAA Division I experience as an assistant coach with stops at UAlbany, Oregon State, Duquesne, and Siena. He began his coaching career at the University of Bridgeport, where he spent two years working primarily with goalkeepers.
As a student-athlete, Wieczorek was a four-year goalkeeper at Fairfield, helping lead the Stags to four MAAC Tournament appearances and two MAAC Championship finals. He later began his coaching career at Fairfield following graduation as the program's goalkeeper coach.
Wieczorek graduated magna cum laude from Fairfield University in 2004 with a double major in English Literature and Communication. He later earned a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Fairfield and completed his Ph.D. in Sport Management at Troy University.
He holds a United Soccer Coaches Premier Diploma, an Advanced National Goalkeeping Diploma, and a Performance Analyst Diploma. Wieczorek also teaches Sports Leadership courses at Creighton University in its Graduate School.
Wieczorek takes over a Cobleskill program that posted a 5-9-3 record during the 2025 season.
