Box Score BENNINGTON, Vt. — After netting two game-tying goals, Southern Vermont College put in its game-winning tally to defeat the SUNY Cobleskill 3-2 Wednesday afternoon at Everett Field in non-conference women's soccer play.
SVC sophomore
Lauren Nesshoever (Rutland, Vermont, Otter Valley Union High School) scored two goals in the win, and classmate
Melodie Orrell (Gloucester, Massachusetts, Gloucester High School) notched the third Mountaineer point while adding an assist to her day.
SUNY Cobleskill freshman
Morganne Dick (Johnstown, New York, Johnstown High School) scored twice for the Fighting Tigers in the loss.
The Fighting Tigers were first on the scoreboard with a nice finish by Dick on a pass by freshman
Molly Spengler (Lawtons, New York, North Collins High School). Spengler's play came down the middle of the field from about 40 yards out, finding Dick who then took a few touches in the middle of the penalty area before slipping it into the bottom left corner for her fourth goal of the season, putting her team ahead 1-0.
Southern Vermont didn't get down on itself and connected for the equalizer not long afterwards. SVC brought the ball deep into Cobleskill territory, connecting passes along the left side. Finally, Orrell made a clean pass to Nesshoever who blasted the ball into the top right portion of the frame for her fourth of the year to make it 1-1 with 25:45 to go in the first.
Cobleskill started to find success with long passes through the Mountaineer defense, allowing players to run onto the ball in open space in front of the SVC box. It nearly paid off at the 25:29 mark when Dick ran on to a great pass and went one-on-one with Southern Vermont freshman keeper
Melissa Mascari (Saratoga Springs, New York, Saratoga Springs High School). Mascari came off her line and made the quick reaction for a full-extension save on a ball placed at the open side of the net to her left.
Dick got the better of Mascari the next time just a minute and a half later, however, as she got in behind the SVC back line on a similar play. This time, she slotted it to the left side of the goal, past the diving keeper, to put in her second of the day and make it 2-1 in the 28th minute. Dick's fifth goal of the campaign was assisted by a nice pass from the right by freshman
Robyn Iversen (Morrison, New York, Seton Catholic). The 2-1 tally would stand through halftime as both teams got settled into their strategies and prevented the opposition from gaining quality chances at net.
SVC saw a handful of great chances in the second half was able to capitalize enough of those. Orrell got the ball in the middle of the field about 35 yards away from the net and went straight at the goal, maneuvering around Fighting Tigers until getting the look needed to pull the trigger and rip the ball home for her first of the season, once again tying the game in the 69th minute.
Almost 10 minutes later, the Mountaineers took their first lead of the day with Nesshoever's second of the match. What proved to be the game winner came after a scramble in the Cobleskill box as the Fighting Tigers attempted to clear the ball. They were unsuccessful, and it found Nesshoever's feet before she took a few touches to get a look at goal and place the ball perfectly at the left side of the net from the middle of the penalty area.
Cobleskill tried to get rested legs into the game, substituting players over the final 12 minutes while attempting to get the ball forward. Southern Vermont, however, was able to possess and prevented the Fighting Tigers from getting any shots off the rest of the way as the Mountaineers sealed their second win in as many games.
Mascari made three saves in the win (2-6) while Cobleskill freshman goalie
Sabrina Adams (Oswego, New York, Mexico High School) turned away four Mountaineer shots in the losing effort (1-8).
SVC owned a 16-7 shot advantage on the day and a 6-4 edge on corner kicks awarded.
Southern Vermont (2-6) now gears up for a tough Saturday home contest against Lesley University, the first New England Collegiate Conference match for the Mountaineers, taking place during the College's Homecoming weekend at 1 p.m. The Fighting Tigers (1-8) resume North Eastern Athletic Conference play on Saturday, visiting Keuka College for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
