Cobleskill Competes at Utica’s Winter Opener

Herberger leads the Tigers with a fifth place finish in the high jump

Utica, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill men's indoor track and field team showcased a strong showing at the Winter Opener hosted by Utica University on Friday evening.

In the 60-meter dash, Gregory McDonald (Wells, ME) finished 39th with a time of 7.47, while Allen Simms (Ithaca, NY) took 59th, clocking in at 7.66. The team also performed well in distance events, with Nik Recore (Peru, NY) leading the way in the mile, placing 47th with a time of 4:56.32. Estaban Delgado (New Rochelle, NY) crossed the line at 5:20.31 and Daniel Jaffin (Woodbury, Conn/Nonnewaug) followed closely behind with a time of 5:20.70, finishing 60th and 62nd, respectively. Recore also led the Tigers in the 800 meters, finishing 32nd with a time of 2:17.63.

Antonio Gonzalez (Niskayuna, NY) highlighted the 400 meters, winning his heat with a time of 57.31 to secure a 25th-place overall finish. In the 200 meters, Allen Simms and Quinn Service placed 67th (25.58) and 73rd (25.93), respectively.

In the field events, McDonald led the way in the long jump, securing a 19th-place finish with a leap of 5.66 meters (18-7). He was followed by Allen Simms's jump of 5.64 meters (18-6) and Quinn Service leap of 5.58 meters (18-3 ¾), who finished 20th and 21st, respectively. In the triple jump, Thomas Herberger (Avon, NY) placed seventh with a mark of 12.32 meters (40-5), while also excelling in the high jump with a fifth-place finish at 1.75 meters (5-8 ¾).

The Tigers' throwers showed promise as well. In the shot put, Zachary Russell (Deposit, NY) led the team with a throw of 10.58 meters (34-8 ½) for 24th place, followed by Cal Marks (Wellsburg, NY/Elmira) in 25th with a mark of 10.44 meters (34-3). Mark Temp (Richmondville, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) placed 33rd with a throw of 8.99 meters (29-6). Marks also led the team in the weight throw, finishing 16th with a toss of 12.06 meters (39-6 ¾), while Temp placed 22nd with a throw of 10.58 meters (34-8 ½).

The Fighting Tigers return to action on Friday, February 7, when they travel back to Utica University for the Blue and Orange Invite and Multi.
