The SUNY Cobleskill women's soccer team delivered a commanding performance on Saturday afternoon, earning its first victory of the season with a resounding 7-0 win over Vermont State University Lyndon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play at the Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
The victory marks a milestone for the Fighting Tigers (1-9-0, 1-6-0 NAC), who showcased relentless offensive pressure and cohesive team play to break into the win column in emphatic fashion. Cobleskill's attack controlled the match from start to finish, outshooting the Hornets 48-0 and holding a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Cobleskill wasted little time seizing control, peppering the Lyndon defense with early scoring chances before first-year midfielder
Gabby Downey (Cobleskill, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the 17th minute on an assist from first-year defender
Amanda Rice (Schoharie, N.Y.). The Tigers continued their offensive surge as senior forward
Jessica Carney (Potsdam, N.Y.) doubled the lead in the 34th minute.
Moments later, first-year forward
EmmaJo Schmidtman (Warrensburg, N.Y.) extended the lead to 3-0 with her first collegiate goal, assisted by sophmore midfielder
Samantha Rotundo (Rome, N.Y.), before Carney struck again in the 42nd minute to send Cobleskill into halftime with a commanding 4-0 lead.
The Fighting Tigers continued their dominance in the second half. Senior defender
Dory Gosselin (Malone, N.Y.) pushed the score to 5-0 in the 57th minute with her first goal of the season, assisted by Downey, who turned in a two-point performance. Senior defender
Kayleigh Bryant (Chittenango, N.Y.) added her third goal of the season in the 61st minute, and senior midfielder
Victoria Rapley (Queensbury, N.Y.) capped the scoring in the 76th minute to seal the 7-0 victory.
Carney led all scorers with two goals, while Downey, Schmidtman, Gosselin, Bryant, and Rapley each found the back of the net once. Rice, Rotundo, Downey, and Bryant each tallied assists in the balanced offensive effort. In total, eight different Fighting Tigers recorded at least one point.
The Cobleskill defense turned in a flawless performance, not allowing a single shot in the match. First-year goalkeeper
Samantha Fausti (Amsterdam, N.Y.) recorded a clean sheet in 90 minutes of play, aided by a back line that kept Lyndon pinned in its own half for the duration of the match.
Saturday's result marks a major breakthrough for the Fighting Tigers, who had battled through a challenging schedule to open the year. Cobleskill entered the match seeking the victory, having faced top regional competition throughout the fall. The team's dominant showing against the Hornets reflects significant growth and renewed momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
