Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tiger women's softball team lost a 10-2 non-conference decision on Thursday afternoon to the Gators of Sage College at Fighting Tiger Park. Originally scheduled as a doubleheader the second game had to be cancelled due to weather. With the loss the Fighting Tigers fell to 4-8 overall on the season while the Gators improve to 6-7 overall on the year.
The Gators opened the scoring in the top of the first when freshman designated hitter Emily Agate, Franklin Square, N.Y., H. Frank Carey High School, singled home a pair of runs to give the visitors the lead at 2-0.
Cobleskill then tied the contest at 2-2 when freshman pitcher Rachel Hall, Greenwich, N.Y., Greenwich High School, doubled home junior shortstop Nicole Flint, Union Springs, N.Y., Cato-Meridian High School/Monroe Community College, who had reached on an error and senior third baseman Hannah Hoffman, Troy, N.Y., Averill Park High School/Hudson Valley Community College, who had singled.
However in the top of the fourth inning after a Fighting Tiger pitching change the Gators broke the game open with a five-run outburst highlighted by a two-run double by sophomore Destiny Wierzbicki, Albany, N.Y., Troy High School, and a two-run single by graduate student third baseman Katy Rimawi, Ballston Spa, N.Y., Ballston Spa High School, which made the score 7-2.
The Gators were led offensively on the afternoon by Rimawi who was 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a pair of RBI and by Wierzibicki who was 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two RBI.
For the Fighting Tigers Hall and Hoffman led the way with Hall finishing 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI with Hoffman also going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Sage right hander Amy Hart, St. Johnsville, N.Y., Little Falls High School, posted the win for the visitors going six innings allowing only two unearned runs on five hits, striking out six and walking only one to move her record to 4-5 on the season.
Freshman McKenzie Cobb, Adams Center, N.Y., South Jefferson High School, took the loss in relief for the Orange & Black to fall to 0-3 on the year allowing six earned runs in two innings of work.
The Fighting Tigers will return to North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play over the weekend traveling to Williamstown, Pa. on Saturday April 14 to meet the Wildcats of Penn College in doubleheader action with first pitch at 1:00 p.m. before returning home to face the Wildcats of SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Sunday April 15 for a pair of league contests at Fighting Tiger Park beginning at 1:00 p.m. while the Gators will return to Empire 8 action traveling to the Rochester area to face the Cardinals of St. John Fisher in doubleheader action on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. prior to facing the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College on Sunday for a pair of conference games.
