Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill Athletic Department announced today that former Fighting Tiger player
Greg Valachovic, Gloversville, N.Y., Mayfield High School/Herkimer Community College, has been named the Interim Men's Lacrosse Coach for the 2022 season. Valachovic replaces Chris Mango who resigned after compiling a 0-8 overall record including a 0-6 record in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play in two seasons with the program.
According to Fighting Tiger Athletic Director
Marie Curran-Headley was happy to welcome the Cobleskill lacrosse program alumnus back to assume the reigns of the program.
"Fighting Tiger athletics and our men's lacrosse program are lucky to have one of our own at the helm. Greg was such a fierce competitor and then later an integral part of the program as an assistant coach. It speaks volumes about an institution and an athletic department when one of your own comes back as your head coach. We're excited to see Greg's passion and sheer love of SUN Cobleskill take our men's lacrosse program to new heights to be a highly competitive program in the North Atlantic Conference."
The Gloversville, N.Y. native and Mayfield High School alumnus played for Cobleskill for two seasons graduating with his bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a minor in Exercise Sport Science in 2018 after transferring from Herkimer County Community College where he played for two seasons earning his Associate's Degree in Sports Management in 2014.
After completing his degree Valachovic began his coaching career as the Fighting Tigers Assistant Coach for the 2018-19 season for his former Head Coach
Ryan Gunzinger after serving as a student-assistant in 2017-18 after injuries cut short his playing career. Since leaving Cobleskill he has continued his coaching career as the Head Modified Coach/Assistant Varsity Coach at Amsterdam High School while also playing in the Interstate Box Lacrosse Association's Albany Hyenas.
With the 2022 season fast approaching, the new head coach is excited to be back with the Fighting Tigers and grateful for the opportunity to lead the program.
"It is an honor to be named the tenth head coach of all time at SUNY Cobleskill, and I'd like to thank
Marie Curran-Headley for giving me the opportunity. I'd also like to thank my family, my former coaches, and teammates. None of this is possible without you. This is an exciting opportunity for me to be able to come back to my Alma Mater, a place where I created so many memories and lifelong relationships with guys I still talk to everyday. I'm beyond excited for this transition and not only happy to be back as a member of the Cobleskill Lacrosse family but a member of the Cobleskill Athletic Department as a whole. I am looking forward to changing the culture here and restoring the great traditions of the Cobleskill Lacrosse program."
