Wilkes-Barre, Pa..: The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team opened the 2024 campaign by dropping a non-league doubleheader with the host Coronels of Wilkes University on Sunday afternoon losing the opener 4-0 then falling in the nightcap 9-7. With the losses the Fighting Tigers open the year with a 0-2 record while the Coronels open the season at 2-0.

In the opener the Fighting Tigers could manage only six hits turning senior starter Wyatt Palmer, Camden, N.Y., Camden High School/Cayuga Community College, a hard-luck loser after allowing only one earned run in four innings of work in the nine-inning contest.

Offensively Cobleskill could only manage six singles led by senior shortstop David Flora, Windsor, N.Y., Windsor High School/Herkimer Community College, who went 2-for-4 and junior catcher Dylan Pohl, East Meadow, N.Y., East Meadow High School, who was 2-for-3 in the game.

The nightcap saw the Fighting Tigers jump out to a 7-0 doing into the bottom of the sixth of the seven inning contest before the home team scored the contest's final seven runs as the Cobleskill bullpen faltered down the stretch tarnishing a strong starting effort from senior Andrew Jarkow, Glen Head, N.Y., North Shore High School, who pitched five scoreless innings striking out two while walking one and allowing only three hits.

At the plate senior right fielder Samuel Gutierrez, Bayside, N.Y., Martin Van Buren High School/Queensborough Community College, provided the bulk of the team's offense going 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk, a run scored and four RBI.

The Orange & Black will return to action on Monday February 26 when they travel to Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. for a non-conference single game versus the Raptors of Bard College with first pitch slated for 2:30 p.m.
