Melbourne, Fla.: The SUNY Cobleskill softball team split a pair of games on Tuesday afternoon at the 2024 Space Coast Invitational losing in the day's opening game to the Lions of Florida Memorial University 9-4 prior to defeating the Flames of the College of Saint Mary's (Nebraska) by a 5-1 margin. With the split the Fighting Tigers are now 1-3 overall on the year.
 
In the opener, Florida Memorial took a 6-0 lead after four innings when the Fighting Tigers tallied four times in the bottom of the fifth on the strength of a two-run single by senior first baseman Alexis Miranda, Nashua, N.H., Nashua High School, and a two-run double off the bat of senior right fielder Emily Lutz, Ellenville, N.Y., Ellenville High School, that cut the deficit to 6-4.
 
However, the Lions would tally three more times in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach and drop Cobleskill to 0-3 for the invitational.
 
Alexis Miranda continued her strong opening to the season going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a pair of RBI while Emily Lutz finished 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
 
In the second game Fighting Tiger junior right hander Jaydaci Chamberlain, Northborough, Mass., Norfolk County Agricultural High School, shut down Saint Mary's allowing the Flames only one unearned run in seven innings of work on four hits to record her first victory of the season and end Cobleskill's three-game skid.
 
The Fighting Tigers used a four-run fifth inning to secure the victory with junior shortstop Kailee DiGiacco, Spencerport, N.Y., Spencerport High School/Monroe Community College, tripling home designated player Emily Lutz with the eventual winning run.
 
Kailee DiGiacco keyed the offensive attack for the Orange & Black going 2-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and two RBI while first-year second baseman Kylie Rattigan, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Arlington High School, was 2-for-3 with an RBI. First-year right fielder Jaidin Wendt, Dalmatia, Pa., Line Mountain High School, was also a factor in the win going 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Cobleskill will next be in action at the Space Coast Invitational on Thursday March 21 when they meet the Eagles of the University of Fort Lauderdale at 10:00 a.m. followed by a meeting with the Broncos of Hastings College with first pitch scheduled for 12:15 p.m.
